It is interesting for further study on this elephant's behavior though, but I'm at least happy at the end result:"According to the latest from the zoo, mother and son are getting along "magnificently". That's good news.

=o)

Getty along 'mangificently' After sedation. After the first elephant was crushed to death.

This zoo should be taking preventative measures. I am very sad to say that because they are not free that perhaps the mother is trying to put the infant out of its misery. I just dont know though I think it is a very fair possibity.

Could be she knows something we don't....sorry to hear about the firstborn...but at least she is being monitored.

I think that your comment assumes mama pora is "thinking" and evaluating the future for dumbo.

This is an aberration with this particular elephant. They are not all killed in the wild or we would be out of elepants by now.

I guess you can't expect an animal to act natural while living in an un natural (for them) environment. If zoos know this behavior is common with elephants kept in captivity, and they know that elephants are 'taught' by other elephants about 'child' raising...what do they expect?? VERY SAD :-( also if other female members of the herd help with baby raising, maybe the mothers are just under too much stress.

simonsez-you should read the artical! this elephant is NOT in the wild, that's why there are problems with elephants in captivity.

Well said lvrofwolves!

simonsez, with all due respect, you're living in a world where there's only black and white with no gray area in between. Don't try to develope tunnel vision in you're journey to life....Peace.

marshx you are so right. I watch elephant documentaries all the time. Elephants are so careful with the babies. So careful. They would never squash them as has happened in this zoo. Something is wrong. Terribly wrong. I hope and I will pray that it is found out and corrected.

If they are raised by more than just the mother, then wouldn't it make sense to have more than just the mother with the baby? And why do they put the baby back in with the mother who tried to kill it!! For CRYING out LOUD!!

Didn't they used to throw Valium at mothers in the 50's when they would get a little stressed out?? Are we regressing here in the animal world?? Ohhh I need a drink.......

Misleadingly broad headline. Not enough information in the article to decide if elephants kill their young. This one zoo specimen has once, and seems to have tried again. It is irresponsible to breed her; she should probably be culled.

I love elephants, they are so close to humans in the way they care for and nurture their young. This made me sad.
